Show Titles

MoodBoardOfCN&NickLogos.png

Left side is Cartoon Network shows while Right side is Nickelodeon shows.

All of the logo designs are designed to show the title clearly for it to be read, yet still have personality with colours and details to make it stand out from the rest.

OK K.O. has a stylish neon colouring and 3D vector style that differentiates from other logos. Samurai Jack is basic but stands out from how strongly drawn it is, and with how the show plays with it as the "title drop" changes the title to white to differentiate it from the red and black background.

Characters

All shows except for The Fairly OddParents (Top left) and Invader Zim (Top Right), which are Nickelodeon, are Cartoon Network.

Visually when creating designs there are many methods to creating characters, from shapes to animals, colours to objects, and so on.

One thing that shows like to do when making characters is to make avoid similar designs, unless specifically made to, through as many ways as they can. OK K.O. has characters with quirks ranging from stick limbs to muscular physiques, circular, square, and triangular heads and noses, and tons more.

An art style can also force interesting designs, Samurai Jack has little to no outlines, and so characters like the titular samurai Jack wears a white long robe with grey lines at points to break the monotony of pure white, along with helping express depth. And Aku, the shadow-like villain, is pitch black yet has a protruding crown-like head, jagged fingers, elbows, and shoulders to create a recognisable silhouette, and, again, to avoid having a situation like Jack having pure white Aku's face is bright with green and flamming orange facial hair.

Looking At My Powerpoint

I'm actually still happy with what I've made, it expresses many details from the setting and plot details, and especially with character designs, I'm flat out proud of the silhouette page as it brings to light a design choice which I haven't seen many mention.

If there was something that I want to be added/expanded it'd be details about character personalities. The only real point that personalities are mentioned is in the Plot section and it's the bare minimum, in order to fix that I would put it in their own page, get into the main characteristics of different characters of different importance and give examples of scenes with them.

Looking Into TV Regulations

The main resource I'll be looking at is the "Republic Act 8370: Children’s Television Act of 1997" webpage.

In Section 8. Submission of Comprehensive Media Program for Children which details requirements for shows, the following is a set of requirements taken from the page.

a)    Children should have programs of high quality which are made specifically for them, and which do not exploit them. These programs, in addition to being entertaining should allow children to develop physically, mentally and socially to their fullest potential;

b)    Children should hear, see and express themselves, their culture, languages and life experiences through television programs which affirm their sense of self, community and place;

c)    Children’s programs should promote an awareness and appreciation of other cultures in parallel with the child’s own cultural background;

d)    Children’s program should be wide-ranging in genre and content, but should not include gratuitous scenes of violence and sex;

e)    Children’s program should be aired in regular time slots when children are available to view and/or distributed through widely accessible media or technologies;

f)    Sufficient funds must be made available to make these programs conform to the highest possible standards; and

g)    Government, production, distribution and funding organizations should recognize both the importance and vulnerability of indigenous children’s television and the steps to support and protect it.

So my main takeaways from if I wanted to make a show would be.

1) It must contain/promote content that helps the development of children.

2) Characters should represent other people's culture and life without deformation.

3) Programming can have a wide variety of genres but they aren't allowed to contain content like gratuitous violence or sex.

And I'm not sure what rule says this, that I can find here, however I do remember an important thing in children's programming a character is not allowed to do a behaviour that is "bad" or negative unless that behaviour is reprimanded or taught in a way that it is bad for children.
