Designing 3 Characters

          "Human"             "Exploration"  "Laziness."

As our video requires a bare-minimum of 3 characters I figured that I could use the 3 main shapes, triangles, squares, and circles, to base characters around.

Actually the use of shapes in character design is interesting as there exists a concept named Shape Language in which these 3 shapes have different connotations.

(Explanation of Shape Language I found here)

At this point I decided on the main designs, they lack a full design, it's more a general grasp to expand on.

The "Human" is a mix of all shapes but mainly the triangle, "Exploration" uses circles, and "Laziness" is squares

About The Concept

(Check here for the concept story)

During the time we were trying to create ideas for a show, my mind wasn't going well and so I had trouble thinking of ideas.

Originally of the concepts written I was going to use the 3 monsters idea for the show. However when drawing the sketches for designs based on shapes I felt less motivated on that idea.

When I was writing ideas I was getting desperate, trying to think of kids' shows that'd fit. But one of the ideas stood out, as it was inspired by a concept for a series I have had for a long time. Someone who lives stuck inside a house begins to confront their inner demons. However if that concept was implemented 1-to-1 then it'd be very much not fitting for a kids series, since the concept would have themes of shame, hurt, and debauchery. So I had a lot of modifying to do.

Title Names

- INNER SIDES

- Psy-Thoughts

- WIDE MINDED

- Thought-Troop (?)

- Concious-Corp (?)

Since the show's concept has a large psychological theme I wanted a name that implied that feeling. The first name I had, INNER SIDES, I felt fit the show's theme and was memorable.

The rest of the names were me trying to catch the lightning in a bottle of the first one. Psy-Theatrics wasn't the best name, since there's nothing theatrical about it and was only made for a pun of "psychic" made by me, someone who can't make puns.

WIDE MINDED was to evoke understanding of other people, like being open minded.

And then there was Thought-Troop and Concious-Corp, even when I made it I knew they were poorly thought of since the names barely fit with the concept, there's no troop and there's zero corporation. I even put a (?) on them!

Character Designing

A quick first attempt at an "expression sheet".

Testing out design varieties, to figure out what works best.

Another hand warm up.

A final draft for the "Human" design.

A final draft for the "Experimentation" design.

A test for expressions and positioning. I didn't get much put in this, if I added more then it'd simply be more positions, details about their design/positioning, a mention of possible colours, etc.

A test for expressions, design details, and positioning. The "Colour Test" was something I was going to try but I decided not to, I think because I wanted time for these images to scan. There's also a lot of empty spaces because I simply couldn't think of things to add.

If I could add anything it'd be the name and adding the colours.

A final draft of the "Laziness" design.

A test for expressions and design details. Ignore the misspelling of laziness. I think this is the best one of the three expression sheets, I go into more detail of the designs, having text clear up some details, and show expressions. There are certain parts that should've been expanded on, namely positioning since the only position "Laziness" is in looks like an "r" without any variety and more facial expressions..

Original Quick Creation Digital-1.png

Made in Clip Studio Paint.

Done as a quick experiment in colouring.

With how quick it was I definitely missed some details, like a lack of text and a lot of things with the Human.

Also I just realised that Experimentation's eyes probably should be white or black.
